Mazak honoured with top employer award

23.03.2018

UK – The Employer of the Year at the 2018 Industrial Cadets Awards has been presented to Yamazaki Mazak.

The UK-based Industrial Cadets programme, first inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2010, is to encourage more engagement from manufacturing and engineering companies with young people. Its awards aim to recognise achievementsof individuals, schools, colleges and employers.

Defeating companies like Airbus, the RAF, Airbus and Tata Consultancy Services, Mazak was presented the accolade early March by HRH The Prince of Wales in London.

Richard Smith, European Group Managing Director at Yamazaki Mazak, said: “It is very rewarding to see the company being recognised for its commitment to championing the next generation of engineering talent.” He also thanked the winners Dave Barnett and Chris Morris, whose invaluable work laid the foundation for winning the prestigious award.

Mazak offers the “Silver Award” Industrial Cadets package, in which students complete at least 30 hours of work experience at the company, which involves a variety of challenges and activities. These include site visits, hands on problem-solving and critical-thinking activities as well as first-hand experiences within its production facility. All this, Mazak says, is to equip the students with skills needed to become engineers.

The company works with six to eight schools, taking on around 30-40 students through the scheme over the year. Two past Industrial Cadets have been recruited as full-time employed apprentices at Mazak and another five have applied for the 2018 intake.
