Success results from contributions of all partners in the chain

KERN, d. o. o. is a high-tech developmental, manufacturing and sales-oriented company, specialised in products for toolshops of all sorts and sizes. The business career of founder Vladimir Kern began in 1969, when he started manufacturing punches. Less than two decades later, his son Viljem Kern took over the helm and steered the company into international waters.
The Kern story began end of the seventies in a handy workshop, situated inside a residential building in Izola. Successful manufacturing of cutting tools led to the expansion of production programme and new employments, and in 1975 the company moved to own manufacturing facility located in an industrial zone. A decade and a half later, son Viljem took over the helm and initiated intense and focused development. The orientation was clear: to become a system supplier of equipment and solutions for the toolshops.

3D-machine vision with NI LabView

3D imaging technology has come a long way from its roots in academic research labs. Thanks to innovations in sensors, lighting and most importantly, embedded processing, 3D vision is now appearing in a variety of machine automation applications.
From vision-guided robotic bin-picking to high precision metrology, the latest generation of processors can now handle the immense data sets and sophisticated algorithms required to extract depth information and quickly make decisions. The LabVIEW Vision Development Module makes 3D vision accessible to engineers through seamless integration of software and hardware tools for 3D within one graphical development environment.

Production efficiency once again holds the centre stage at Arburg Technology Days

At the renowned Arburg Technology Days which took place from March 19–22, innovative examples of efficiency were presented at five stations in the "Efficiency Arena", including the manufacturing of one-off products and small-volume batches using a FreeFormer, human-machine interaction, and mass production on an electric Allrounder.
"Our technology days have been a magnet for international plastics processors for years. The interest was immense: about 6900 visitors from 52 countries came to Losburg to witness first hand our innovative and efficient solutions for plastic parts manufacturing."

74

Tools necessary for manufacturing composite products

In the previous issue, we took a look at composites and fabrics used in making composite products. Every product needs a mould (tool) and a process to cure the resin.
Different moulds are used in the manufacture of composite products (to be described in the next issue). They are mostly made of aluminium, steel or composites. Steel moulds are the most durable, but also more expensive to make compared to aluminium moulds. Jure Berk

Toolmaking and machine building

86

Toolmakers the workhorse of domestic economy

Toolmaking is one of our key industries, employing more than 3500 professionals in R&D and production departments over Slovenia, and at the same time supporting the export of products made using domestic tools. Our globally successful toolmaking efforts therefore help put bread on the table to a multiple of this number in the Slovenian economy.
Slovenian toolmakers are important suppliers of complex tools and moulds for large international customers. Our toolmakers dispose with top know-how that could be used even better. Taking into account the migration currents in this industry, Slovenia stands before an opportunity to increase the growth rate. Knowledge and professionals are abundant in our backyard, they only need proper orientation and their work should bring even more added value. Experts believe Slovenia is now the centre of European toolmaking.

Welding fumes demand good worker protection

Welding fumes are very harmful and must be stopped from reaching the welder's lungs. Welding fumes can severely and permanently damage the welder's lungs, so he must be protected from them as well as possible. One of the most efficient protection methods is extraction at the source – machine or workplace.
Welding is extremely harmful to health due to the fumes being released. Tomaž Čuk from IPRO ING, d. o. o. explains the fumes are generated as the base and filler material melt during the welding process. Vapours that form as the metal and additives melt (electrode coating, powder ...) cool down when mixed with the air, then condense and react with oxygen to form tiny particles of metal oxide (dust). Tomaž Čuk

Interview: Simon Vipavec

The path of an entrepreneur is long, and the winner will be the one who makes the least mistakes

This is how the entrepreneur Igor Akrapovič, whose surname is a synonym for premium quality and prestige, responds when asked about his formula for success. Company Akrapovič from Ivančna Gorica manufactures premium exhaust systems for motorcycles and sports cars. It was established in 1990 by successful Slovenian motorcycle racer Igor Akrapovič. His trademark belongs to a league of its own and promises high performance, top design and an unmistakable, deeply resonant exhaust sound. All components are brought into a synergy by about 600 employees, using state-of-the-art technology, processes and best materials. The company exports 99 % of its products – exhausts of choice for more than 80 world motorcycle and sports car racing champions.

Main concern of modern IT – data and security

Europe's largest computer fair CeBIT has remained in the shadow of a much more pompous mobile telephony congress during the last years. Mobile devices and applications may be attracting more attention from the general public, but the foundations of everything are still run by IT services and engineers, every day facing the challenges of data management and security in companies and elsewhere.
The leitmotiv of CeBIT 2014 was a nonce word "datability". Sheer quantities of digital data have flooded our world, as individuals, businesses and other organisations struggle to control it. The storage of digital data may be an insignificant issue, as the capacity of storage media increases, but long-term storage is a greater challenge. Elegant solutions are available – data storage at a secondary location with a trusted provider (inside EU for Slovenian companies).

Data and money under attack

This year, the cybercriminals are targeting our privacy and money, say Kaspersky Lab. To stay safe from malware in the enterprise setting, every employee, regardless of their position, should be aware of how their actions influence security.
Last year's research conducted by the analysts from B2B International in cooperation with Kaspersky Lab, one of the leading developers of antivirus and internet security software, showed one of the main reasons for security incidents in companies is mishandling the software being used every day. Four of five security incidents inside a company are tightly related to inappropriate employee actions. Approximately 32 percent of participants confirmed data leaks were caused by employee mistakes. More than 30 percent of company representatives reported incidents including mobile devices loss or theft, and 19 percent of them spoke about premeditated leaks.
