Protecting homes with mobile devices

It is in our human nature that we wish to live in a safe environment. This is why man has always been building shelters, dwellings and houses with front doors to ensure the safety of the home. Even in this era, the need to protect the entrance into the dwelling is very real.
Technically conscious users usually dispose with several smart and mobile devices. These devices can now be used for safekeeping the front (or some other) doors. Namely, Slovenian engineers and researchers from the Intech-les development centre and companies Elgoline, Kovinoplastika Lož, ProPlace and Jožef Stefan Institute have developed a solution called E-doorman. It is an innovative security system that provides both security and comfort. mag. Borut Grošičar

Manufacturing and Logistics

Let a millimetre really be a millimetre

Laboratories are an organisational unit in company Sistemska tehnika, d. o. o. from Ravne na Koroškem, responsible for the calibration of measures, dimensional measurements and nondestructive testing. They were established in 1989, when the Ravne iron works decided to build a new laboratory. Today there are an accredited calibration laboratory, an accredited testing laboratory, an accredited inspection body and a laboratory for nondestructive testing.
The Laboratories are headed by dr. Tadeja Primožič Merkač, who devoted the last 15 years of life to metrology. The Laboratories currently employ 24 people, catering to the needs of approximately 700 customers. Their customers include manufacturing and service businesses in Slovenia and abroad, all having to deal with high standards and tight tolerances on complex products. Their services are also trusted by successful companies from Germany, Austria and the countries of former Yugoslav republics.

7 characteristics of a good high-flexibility cable

High-flexibility cables are mainly used in energy chains, cable drums and other applications with large cable motions and accelerations. The bending radius of the best high-flexibility cables in long-term use can be smaller than 5x cable diameter, they withstand speeds up to 10 m/s and accelerations up to 50 m/s2, as well as maintain their flexibility down to -40 °C. Cable life is from 1 to several million bending cycles.
A long product life demands a proper cable layout in the energy chain and their connection at the chain's connecting link. A good high-flexibility cable must fulfil the safety requirements and must be resistant to the environmental influences (oil, UV, ozone ...). This time, we will be focusing on the cable's mechanical properties.

Doping: a dark alley with several side exits

Prof. dr. Tadej Malovrh, dr. vet. med. is a prominent Slovenian expert for doping. Malovrh, who earned his PhD at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana, is also acting president of the Anti-doping board with the Athletic Federation of Slovenia and the delegate for doping control at the European Athletic Association (EAA). He is employed at the Veterinary faculty as a professor, lecturer and researcher in the field of immunology, heads the National veterinary institute and is also responsible for the diagnostics of some epizootic diseases, as well as for bio-security. In addition, he is also an expert auditor with the Croatian Accreditation Agency. Petra Bauman

Bioplastics – an alternative with a future?

As a complement and in some areas as an alternative to conventional plastics, bioplastics appear to be a logical and necessary step for a forward-looking plastics industry. However, we cannot go without a prior clarification of the meaning of the prefix “bio-” that may have two completely different meanings.
Biodegradable plastics consist primarily of biodegradable polymers and additives. Special bacteria and their enzymes demonstrably convert biodegradable plastics into biomass, CO2 or methane, water and minerals as soon as the macromolecules have been sufficiently fragmented by other degradation mechanisms. For a plastic to be termed “compostable” in Europe, 90 per cent of it must degrade in clearly defined conditions into fragments smaller than 2 mm within 12 weeks. Biodegradable plastics are not necessarily made from renewable resources and can also be derived from mineral oil. Biodegradability therefore depends not on the raw material, but on the plastic’s chemical structure.

MEDICA and COMPAMED fairs in Düsseldorf from 20. to 22./23. November

The global health market is growing annually by about six per cent. The drivers of this development are an ageing society in many countries, in others a strong population growth, technical advancement and above all, the increased purchasing power all over the world. The health economy can therefore assume positive market prospects in the medium and long term, despite the financial crisis. Irrespective of an overall growing demand for medical care and the associated medical devices and medical technologies, the structure of the demand is gradually changing.
As a consequence of an increasing density of provision i.e. a rising number of outpatient medical care units and clinics, in many countries there is a strong demand for basic medical equipment, while the focus on innovation is low by comparison. In the "traditional" markets, for example in the major industrial countries in Europe, North America and Japan, the cost pressure in the healthcare systems is rising. This does admittedly diminish the demand. However, growth impulses boosted by the private healthcare market and the focus on innovation are higher overall. The global market appears to be equally complex with regard to the choice of products.

Office in the cloud live at MOS 2013 fair

Company Stroka Produkt, d. o. o. from the stroka.si group, one of the leading providers of integral IT-support for small and medium enterprises in Slovenia and Microsoft's partner of year 2013, has presented itself at this year's International Trade and Business Fair in Celje. Innovatively and with style, following their philosophy of different, uncharacteristic approach "Do IT different", they have showcased live the work of a cloud office. Namely, for the duration of the fair they have moved five workplaces from Radlje ob Dravi and Ljubljana to their exhibition booth in Celje and demonstrated how "mobile" an office can be today with modern information technology.
stroka.si group (Stroka Produkt, d. o. o.) is a specialised provider of integral information support to small and medium enterprises, currently successfully servicing and supporting more than 650 companies. More than 54 experts work for the stroka.si group in Radlje ob Dravi, where the company is headquartered, and in offices in Ljubljana and Maribor. Most of them are young and educated staff, using creative approach to develop innovative solutions for companies and organisations.

Molecular detectives

The molecular detectives, exploring organisms, materials, processes and phenomena on the molecular level, are on the rise. Many researchers delve deep into the nanoworld of cells, proteins and genes, employing new technologies for faster, cheaper and more reliable diagnostics.
Others use infrared waves to study processes on the molecular level and optimize industrial processes such as combustion of coal in thermal power stations. Some are developing new sensor systems facilitating a quicker detection of pathogenic organisms and contaminants in the water and air. The fourth group uses radio identification, video analyses and thermal imaging of trucks in tunnels to detect engine faults and hazardous cargo in order to prevent accidents.

3D-technologies in R&D and production

Beginning of October, the 3D grupa business cluster organised the first seminar titled "3D-technologies in R&D and production" in hotel Aristos in Zagreb. The event was warmly welcomed by Croatian companies, attracting more than 200 attendees from more than 70 companies and reaffirming the organisers' conviction that 3D-technologies can considerably improve the operations of modern companies.
The 3D grupa cluster consists of Croatian companies Izit, Tehnoprogres and Topomatika, having years of experience with the industrial use of 3D-technologies at home and abroad. The attendees were presented with several case studies of practical use of modern 3D-technologies. These technologies are helpful in every phase of design, preparing for manufacturing, manufacturing, quality control and maintenance.
