Greatest filter performance in the smallest installation space - Lehmann-UMT presents new compact unit at AMB

29.07.2022

With the newly developed compact unit consisting of a chip disposal system and a filter unit, the German company creates an all-in-one solution for the optimal treatment of oil in the manufacturing process. The intelligent combination of filter and conveyor unit ensures maximum efficiency and sustainability.

The system was designed for a Swiss company that, among other things, mills titanium for medical technology products. In the joint project, Lehmann-UMT, as a specialist in filter and conveying technology, adapted its in-house technology to the customer's plant concept. The innovative product design meets the high demands for the smallest possible space requirement and a high litre output. A chip conveyor equipped with a 0.35 mm slotted screen is used for pre-separation of the coarse chip, so that separation from the liquid component already takes place in the chip system. The chips are discharged into a tipping container for subsequent recycling. The pre-cleaned oil is sucked off and pumped onto the integrated compact filter. There, filtration takes place with a fineness of up to 30 µm. Accurate chip pre-separation ensures that only the finest fraction of the dirt load reaches the filter. This protects the filter fleece and reduces follow-up costs. The treated oil is cooled and fed back into the process via an 80-bar high-pressure pump controlled by a frequency converter. In this way, 170 litres of oil per minute are filtered. The system handles large chip quantities with minimal carry-over of the process oil. In addition, the compact system has the receptacles for the peripheral systems, such as heat exchanger, fire extinguishing system, oil mist separation and cooler.

1Compact chip disposal and filter system

The compact system is used by the customer for two milling machines. The control via an automation cell ensures that the two machine tools are loaded so that they can produce unmanned, even at weekends. In addition to the standard level monitoring, sensors and pressure regulators check the status of all components. A BUS-system exchanges signals with the connected processing machine. This enables an error-free automatic mode. Another advantage is the energy-efficient supply of the machining process, which is achieved by optimising the fluid paths in the system and designing the pump sizes according to demand. In addition, despite the compact design, maintenance accessibility has been improved both for the filter and conveyor unit and for the milling machines. The compact unit can be individually adapted to the material to be processed in oil and emulsion and can alternatively be equipped with a continuous belt or suction belt filter.

2The compact filter - maximum filter performance in the smallest installation space

The compact filter, as a paper belt filter system, will also be on show at the AMB as an individual unit. A high water column and an optimum filter cake structure ensure a very good filtering result. The hydrostatic system makes pumps superfluous. The water column pushes the fluid through the filter aid. The utilisation of the filter fleece is 95 %. An active transport chain reduces the physical load on it. The durability is extended and almost any filter fleece can be used. Furthermore, the dirt can be separated from the fleece by a scraper when it is discharged, so that it can also be used for recycling purposes. The combination of trough and inclined bed filters guarantees a high drying capacity. Special calming zones enable optimum dirt discharge and prevent particles from falling back. The compact filter impresses with its high litre capacity on the smallest footprint and thus creates space for additional systems.

3Lehmann-UMT stands for a high level of vertical integration "Made in Germany" - from the initial idea to the final system.

In addition to the space-saving conveyor and filter system and the compact filter, Lehmann-UMT will also be presenting the StingR® ultra-fine filter system at the trade fair in Stuttgart. The filter with pneumatic automatic backwash ensures extended service life and low maintenance. The StingR® can be easily integrated into existing structures and ensures stable production processes, reduces wear on the machines and offers the highest quality in production. Furthermore, a magnetic filter is exhibited. This is particularly suitable for the pre-separation of large quantities of ferromagnetic dirt.

4Part of the Lehmann-UMT team

Lehmann-UMT stands for custom-fit filtration from small individual plants with 30-40 l up to large plants with more than 5,000 l per minute. The Lehmann-UMT team of experts will be available from 13 to 17 September in Hall 8 - Stand 8E78 to present the technological highlights of the plants.
